performingborders pamphlet # 1: Moi Tran + Madalena Bettencourt & Lúcia Santos

17th April 2024

We are excited to launch performingborders’ first pamphlet presenting two out of three artist commissions selected as part of the open call for experimental writing commissions launched last Autumn in collaboration with performance, possession + automation.

This month we are thrilled to present:

Moi Tran – PERFORMANCE MAP WITH NO END FOR SOLO OR MANY PARTICIPANTS AT ANY TIME AND ANYWHERE

For her writing commission, Moi Tran ‘disintegrates writing’ by embracing multisensoriality, randomness, and encoding. Through an exploration of the performativity of ciphers, Moi responds to a decolonial impulse to withdraw, avoid, and possess, creating intentional forms of resistance through map making.

Madalena Bettencourt & Lúcia Santos – LÚCIA + MADALENA (English version + Portuguese version)
To understand spells and possession, Lúcia and Madalena created spell boxes for each other. These boxes contained objects that had defined them at various points in time, at that specific moment, or perhaps never. Exchanged at the beginning of a 10-day shared residency period, these boxes became the focal point of a creative process that bound Lúcia and Madalena together. For their joint commission, they developed separate bodies of work which involved building shifting spaces, tattooing, automatic writing, and video making.
