performingborders x Citemor 2026: Wura Moraes + Dori Nigro

12th July 2026

“The Sirens have a still more fatal weapon than their song, namely their silence” _Franz Kafka

This year, performingborders is back at Citemor Festival (Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal), this time as a programming and co-producer partner, alongside a new edition of Live Art Writers Network (more on this soon!). We will co-present the evening programme of the 24th July 2026, at the historic Teatro Esther de Carvalho, during what promises to be a weekend of incredible artists.

As this is a festival dedicated to accompaniment and experimentation, we have invited two artists with whom we have been developing collaborations, conversations and frequencies over the years, and who are now making their debut in Montemor.

Opening the evening, Dori Nigro presents “The Silence of the Sirens” followed by Wura Moraes with “Reverberations of a Body-Canvas”, both creative and socio-political research projects, conceived and adapted for the Esther de Carvalho venue.

Over the coming weeks, the artists will be in residence in Montemor, with mutual support and curatorial guidance from the team at performingborders and Associação Reflexo Azul.

Brazil is the country where the most queer people are killed. 2016 was the most violent year on record: 347 murders. Pernambuco, the state in north-eastern Brazil where I was born, is one of the most dangerous places to be gay, black and a woman.

Bárbara was a living archive that embodied all the identities marked for death. I adored Bárbara. I loved her because she was hated by everyone. With every punch, every stab, every gunshot, I died too… but I survive to sing with the mermaids.

Reverberations of a Body-Canvas by Wura Moraes

Wura starts from the production of images, which are not only visual but also auditory and kinetic, and which manifest themselves through contact with props arranged within the space; when activated, these props enable the formation of different tableaux.

The objects and props come from her family archive, as part of the larger project that Wura has been developing: “Confluências”, evoking the memory of her father, Mário Calixto, and her uncle, Miltércio Santos – both dancers and creators – whose artistic expression she seeks to continue and expand upon.

Tickets are Pay What You Can and on a first come first basis at the venue: Teatro Esther de Carvalho, Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal. Map link here.
