March – November 2020

performingbordersLIVE is back in 2020 to present a public programme of open calls, artist digital commissions, residencies, workshops, open conversations, and events, focusing on the exploration of experimental and exciting artistic practices happening within the UK Live Art sector around notions and lived experiences of physical, cultural, juridical, racial, gendered, class, and everyday borders.

Curated by Alessandra Cianetti and Xavier de Sousa, performingbordersLIVE started in 2019 and draws from the curatorial research platform performingborders. conversations on live art | borders | crossings that since 2016 has been gathering original interviews, writings and experimental responses from live artists, academics, activists and art professionals on physical and conceptual borders within an increasingly shared feeling of uncertainty.

This year performingbordersLIVE expands its discussions and actions with more online and live opportunities and gatherings in London, Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, and Copenhagen to keep widening the conversation around borders and create a broader inclusive discussion that will also be freely accessible online.

CURATORS’ NOTE – March 2019

The arts industry faces unprecedented challenges that impact artists’ lives, working methods, income, and communities as a result of the current health crisis we face. As we start to access the issues laying ahead, one thing is for sure: all of performingborders’ work and efforts are to support and nurture our communities, our colleagues and friends, our families and audiences. For that reason, today we are only announcing our programme for digital-led work that can be produced *and* shared safely under the current UK circumstances. We will continue to work with our partners and follow experts’ advice on how to proceed with public and physical works. Those outcomes will be announced at a later stage. We are also doing our best to ensure that performingbordersLIVE can support more cultural workers this year beyond what we had thought, to make sure we keep platforming and supporting more practitioners with migrant backgrounds.

With love and hope,

Xavier de Sousa & Alessandra Cianetti
