Open Call for a Curatorial Residency on Curating Borders | Presented by Never Done and performingbordersLIVE20

performingbordersLIVE20 and Never Done are collaborating to create an opportunity to support a  womxn or non-binary curator/artist with a curatorial practice from an ethnic minority and/or migrant background to participate in a week’s residency in London during July 2020.

Drawing from performingborders ongoing reflections on the relation between Live Art and notions and lived experiences of cultural, juridical, racial, gendered, class, physical, economic, and everyday borders; and the Never Done residency programme set up in 2018 to allow curators and artists to follow through research and development activities, this curatorial residency invites an England-based practitioner to spend a week in London (digitally if the current crisis won’t allow movement) to develop their practice and share their work.

We would like to receive expressions of interest (EOI) from practitioners who would consider the opportunity of a week to relocate their practice in London (digitally if the current crisis won’t allow movement), and develop a response: performative, discursive, visual or literary that can be shared live or published online, exploring perceptions, contestations and challenges of borders experienced and imagined and potential ways the curatorial work can reimagine them.

How to apply

We ask that you structure your EOI of between 300-500 words OR a 5-minute video or sound recording, around the following:

• Introduce yourself and your practice, and why this opportunity appeals to you?
• Tell us about your current or emerging research that you would like to pursue during the residency, that might influence your approach, work plan and form of response exploring the context of ‘borders’
• Indicate resources, organisations or individuals that you would like to be in contact with whilst in London, and how they might enhance your professional development, or peer network
• Indicate how you would like to share your experience and practice either when in London or after the residency (e’.g. intimate public gathering with selected guests and/or online reflective piece – text, sound, video…)

Eligibility

***Update: this call is now open nationally (excl. London) and internationally if the proposal is for a digital residency***

This is an opportunity for one England-based womxn or non-binary curator/artist with a curatorial practice from an ethnic minority and/or migrant background. This opportunity excludes London-based practitioners. (Collective proposals will be considered although the honorarium will remain the same and we won’t be able to provide additional accommodation and travel fees)

Residency dates (depending on the current health crisis we are happy to receive proposal for digital residencies or evaluating the possibility of postponing the residency’s dates until October 2020 in dialogue with the successful applicant and in line with the best procedures to be safe)

Arrival Monday 29th June – Departure Sunday 5th July 2020

Honorarium, covered expenses, and support

The selected applicant will receive a honorarium fee of £100 per day (tot of £700); return train tickets (not applicable for digital residency); accommodation for 6 nights at the GREEN ROOMS (not applicable for digital residency); support in contacting listed organisations and relevant people indicated in the submitted EOI; advice on additional London-based events, venues, opportunities and relevant contacts by Never Done and performingbordersLIVE20 curators. 

Accommodation (not applicable for digital residency): The successful resident will have their own single room with private bathroom, breakfast at the hotel is included, and the resident will be able to access GREEN ROOMS’ Bar & Lobby, the Residents’ Lounge, and will be able to participate to the hotel’s planned arts events (for ticketed events, the resident will have to pay for their own tickets)

Selection

The EOI will be selected by Adelaide Bannerman, initiator of Never Done residency series, and performingbordersLIVE20 curators Alessandra Cianetti and Xavier de Sousa. Successful applicants will be notified by 30th May 2020.

About the partnership:

Never Done is a residency programme initiated in 2018 by curator Adelaide Bannerman. Organised in partnership with cultural institutions, the selection of participants is based on research and invitation only, and on some occasions co-selected with partners, enabling curators and artists to conduct research visits that promote their activity to new contacts, peers, and audiences. neverdone.org.uk
